| At the death of Bishop F. D. Washington in January 1988, Eastern New York had grown to be more than 180 churches. Therefore, after consideration of the National Church and General Board it was concluded that Eastern New York should be divided into four jurisdictions because of increasingly growing work and there were already capable men who would be able to oversee the work of each jurisdiction. Thus begin the Second Jurisdiction.
